Scholarships

LEAP Scholarships for 2023-24

A Eligible students will have completed two semesters of LEAP by May 2024.

LEAP scholarships can be found on the University's Scholarship website. Once you have logged in, search keyword: LEAP.

  • LEAP is offering three different opportunities with multiple awards for each. Criteria will be listed within the scholarship application, but all scholarship applicants must have two semesters of LEAP completed by May.

  • Peer Advisor Scholarships are available for current Peer Advisors. Applications can be found HERE.

 

LEAP Scholars

LEAP scholars are students who completed two semesters of LEAP.  These students are eligible for LEAP Scholarships and eligible to purchase cords for graduation.  Cords are available by contacting Kaley Tucker (kaley.tucker@utah.edu), or by coming to the Sterling Sill Center, Rm 116.

LEAP Student Symposium

The 2024 LEAP Symposium will be on April 22, 2024

The LEAP Learning Community provides an opportunity for students to present their work in a scholarly setting to students, faculty and other members of the University of Utah community. Students from all LEAP courses are invited to present their research and creative work at our spring Symposium. The LEAP Symposium will take place on April 22, 2024 in the A. Ray Olpin Student Union Ballroom.

To present at the 2024 LEAP Symposium:

  • Students must be the primary producer of the work.
  • Student researchers are expected to be in attendance during the main exhibition period.
  • Complete the application (will open in March 2024)

 

For the event:

  • This event will be held in-person at the Student Union.
  • A panel judges including faculty, staff and students, will evaluate the projects and award prizes.
  • Family and friends are encouraged to attend.

Employment

The LEAP Program hires Summer LEAP Leaders to help with summer orientation and the registering of next fall’s LEAP students. Current LEAP students or past or current Peer Advisors are eligible to apply.  We are looking for enthusiastic, reliable LEAP students to serve in these roles.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Tabling and answering questions about the LEAP Program during New Student Orientation (NSO)
  • Helping students new to the University register for classes in computer labs during orientation
  • LEAP Summer  Leaders are the key to registering an informed and excited fall LEAP cohort!

 Selection Criteria:

  • Ability to work up to 10 hours per week
  • Available for at least 75% of the NSO dates
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Reliable and conscientious

  • A student who worked as a Peer Advisor in the LEAP Program in the prior year.
  • In addition to the normal responsibilities of the Peer Advisor, they are also leaders over the Peer Advisor Co-hort
  • Senior Peer Advisors are considered University Employees and receive $1,500 per semester.

Who are Peer Advisors?

  • Peer Advisors are students who participated in the LEAP experience so successfully as first year student that we hired them to come back as role models, liaisons and helpers.
  • Each LEAP section has a Peer Advisor, and they are in the class every day, along with the students. They can answer students’ questions about class content as well as questions about how to navigate the University.
  • To prepare for their responsibilities, Peer Advisors take an online summer class and participate in a two-day workshop just before classes begin.
  • Peer Advisors are considered University Employees and receive $1,300 per semester.

The Access & Inclusion Engineering class (LEAP 1501-Section 5) is designed to inspire and support students in Engineering and Mining Sciences by providing opportunities to make connections, share their experiences, create a sense of belonging and community, and mitigate the academic, professional, social challenges faced by many minoritized groups in the Colleges of Engineering and Mining.

Primary Responsibilities of Mentors

  • Each mentor will be assigned no more than three mentees
  • Must meet in person at least once a month with each mentee
  • Must check-in (via email/text/phone) at least two additional times with each mentee every month


Qualifications

  • Current student in the College of Engineering and/or Mines
  • Must be able to provide at least six hours of mentoring per month
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good leadership skills
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5


Pay/Compensation

A stipend of $300 per semester paid in equal amounts at the end of each month (Sept - Dec. and Jan - April)
